“Air conditioner not working...Sorry, nothing I can do about it.”

We booked this room about two weeks before we arrived in Cocoa Beach. We were going to stay at this motel for two nights. However, soon after we entered the room, and turned on the AC, we knew there was a problem. We were allowed to check in early (2:00pm), and we informed the front desk of the broken air conditioner. After a short time away from the room, we again called down to the front desk to let them know our AC wasn't working. After a short walk to the beach, we stopped in to the office and spoke to Melissa, who seemed surprised our AC was still not working. She called the maintenance man who told her the AC was dead, and needed new parts. Melissa then informed us there were no other rooms at her motel, or their sister motel. She went on to tell us that it was after 4pm, so the guy who could fix the AC was gone for the day. (and the parts house was also closed). At this point my wife was getting upset with Melissa, since we let them know about the problem more than 2 hours earlier. That's when Melissa told us "There is literally nothing I can do for you." She then gave us a look like, why are you still here? I asked if she could get a fan to us, since it was now cooler outside than in our room. (we never got a fan) So, we kept our door open until we were ready to turn in, then tried our best to sleep in a hot room on a hard bed. In the morning we spoke to someone who didn't really want to hear what happened, but did give us a partial discount, and did not try to charge us for the second night. Food for thought...The AC was not working when we arrived, so, did anybody check to see the room was in usable condition before renting it, or did they not care? Neither option seems applicable to a well run establishment does it?
