“Griepentrog Family Vacation”

  , Crystal Lake
We were thankful you had one room left when we pulled in around midnight on December 22nd. We were traveling 1,100 miles, or 18 hours, by car from north of Chicago to just outside of Dallas, TX to spend our first Christmas in 17 years with family in TX. By midnight we realized we all needed a good rest for several hours before we finished up the last leg of our trip. You were not the first hotel we stopped at -- the 2 exits prior to yours - had 5-6 hotels that we stopped by and all were full for the night with Christmas travelers. We pulled off on your exit and felt fortunate that you had a room available. All the staff were friendly and helpful. A couple of comments on the room: it was clean, but there was room for improvement. Dead spider (a large one) behind the bathroom door, the toilet bowl was heavily rust stained and the toilet seat was very loose. The continental breakfast area was too small - only 3 tables for the entire hotel and virtually no food was left for later arriving guests (but with still about an hour left for the breakfast deal). None of these were a large concern, but are mentioned for your quality improvement possibilities. Of much larger concern - the only room available was a smoking room (which we agreed to - we're not smokers). We did not smell any cigarette smoke at all ,which we appreciated. However, we noticed the smoke detector was removed and the wires were exposed. We find it hard to believe that the smoke detector had to be removed because it's considered a smoking room. Really? If there was a fire, we and all other guests would have been at serious risk without warning. This is a problem for us and would impact whether we stayed at your hotel (or another hotel with the same issue) in the future. We are not educated on the State of Arkansas rules for hotel fire safety, but this seems to be a huge oversight-whereever the responsiblity lies. Even if the State allows this practice in hotels, we're surprised in this day and age that a reputable hotel would consider that offering smoking rooms and disconnecting the smoke detectors is really considered more important than the possible fire and deaths of guests in your hotel. In this respect (only, but it's a big one), we were disappointed with your hotel and our room.
