“Great except for check-out”

Friendly check-in and other staff; good breakfast, ample, clean, quiet room. I would stay again. My only problem was at check-out, as described below. There was insufficient space to describe it in the "problem" space below, so I had to put it here in the review.When I checked out nobody was at the desk. Door from desk to lobby was ajar. Door from desk into a back room was also ajar. After callling "Hello" several times with no response and looking behind me to see if a staff member might be there, I took a few steps into the door from the lobby and said "Hello" a couple more times to see if anybody might be in the back room. A young man angrily came from the breakfast area and told me that the desk area was for employees only, and I was never to go in there again. He then disappeared for several minutes (I found out he was filling the breakfast cereal containers). When he reappeared he still appeared angry. When I asked him what I should have done when I couldn't find anybody, all he could say was that I had only been there thirty seconds (I don't think that is true, but I can't verify it). When I asked for directions to the airport he replied. "Which airport? San Francisco?" That seemed odd, as the motel is a San Jose airport motel. When I said San Jose, he replied, "I guess take 880." Fortunately a guest told me that there were no signs to the airport, but that I should take 880 south, and then take the Brokaw Road exit and turn right on Brokaw Road.Sugggestions: 1. If nobody is at the desk leave a sign that says "Back in less than 5 minutes" or whatever. 2. If the desk clerk leaves the desk area, don't leave the door ajar if that is a prohibited area. 3. Have a bell at the desk if nobody is there. If a staff member is in the area but is busy, upon hearing the bell have him call out to the customer that he will be there shortly. 4. Make sure all desk clerks can give correct directions to the airport. 5. Train the young man on duty on November 14 at 7am in customer relations. I am still puzzled as to why he was so hostile.My first three comments below on hotel staff are based on my checkout experience only. All other staff members were fine.
