“Beautiful location, responsive staff”

  , Iowa City
We recently stayed for four nights at Days Inn on Jekyll Island. What we DIDN'T like: * The rooms, though clean, are pretty outdated. We don't watch TV, as a rule, so the huge old boxy TV bolted to the dresser wasn't an issue for us - but others may find it bothersome. * We had significant problems getting a crib/Pack-n-Play for our 9-month-old baby. At other hotels, when I call to request one, it's set up in the room when we arrive. Here, the staff were dismissive about my request. I even called to let them know we'd be arriving much later than expected (airline problems), and learned then that someone would put a Pack-n-Play "behind the front desk" for us. Well and good, but it was just the frame - no mattress, no sheet - and the night auditor did not have access to the storage closet to get another one. So, baby slept on a pallet we made up on the floor at 1:00 a.m. Not a great start to our four-night stay. Moreover, I had to chase down staff the next morning to get the mattress and sheet, and they never provided a crib sheet for the Pack-n-Play, but a full-sized one. * The other problem we encountered was with room service. No one ever came in to clean, change sheets, make up the bed, swap out towels, empty garbage, etc. Again, we had to call the front desk to request this. When room service finally showed up, they literally handed us trash can liners and towels and then went on their way! So what went well, you ask? Well, we were there over Memorial Day weekend for a family reunion. We didn't know it in advance, but the hotel had planned a big party on Saturday - they grilled out, had a DJ, offered games and contests, and showed a movie at night. The kids loved watching the movie from the hot tub by the light of the moon! Also, when we complained about the Pack-n-Play issue, both the assistant manager and the GM were very responsive. I appreciate good customer service - but the best case scenario is to never need it. If the staff were more attentive, they wouldn't have to be responsive.
