“Poor customer service”

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Days Inn (Portage, IN). After a long, exhausting day at the beach, we were excited to spend a relaxing night together. When I received email confirmation about our stay, we were instructed that check-in was at 3pm. We finished at the beach around 1:30pm and I called the hotel to check if there was any possibility of getting in an hour early. The front desk woman seemed very rushed and distressed explaining that, "the night prior, all the rooms booked up and the staff was having issues getting the rooms ready for new guests... We would be lucky to get in at 3pm." Yet we had booked our room nearly 3 days before that. Shouldn't our room take precedence over last minute bookings? We then decided to go to lunch to kill some time. We showed up at the hotel at 3pm - as instructed per our confirmation. The "lobby" was packed with people waiting, complaining, demanding assistance. We were not even helped. We went and sat back in the car but after 5 more minutes outside in the 95 degree heat, we went back inside and requested access to the pool. Unfortunately, the pool was extremely run down. There was sand and debris all over the bottom of the pool, paint chipping, stuffy air - just very unwelcoming conditions. The only positive thing that happened on our stay was that the front desk woman brought our room keys to the pool for us. We got in our room - which was fine. It was nice to have A/C at that point. We went out to dinner, based on a recommendation from the Portage, IN activities book located in the hotel "lobby." The reviews were extremely misleading and we would up at a smoke-filled, run down bar in the middle of a sketchy neighborhood. We paid $10 in cab fare to drive 2.2 miles and ended up having to walk from there to find a decent restaurant. After that "adventure" we called the cab company to come back to the hotel - we were just ready to call it a night. We were told 45 minutes to an hour we would have to wait. Unfortunately since the Days Inn didn't have a shuttle service, my boyfriend and I walked the 2.2 miles back to the hotel, in the pitch dark, with cars zooming everywhere as we crossed the highway and train tracks. Not the brightest idea, but what else were we supposed to do? In the meantime, we passed the Holiday Inn Express and Best Western - beautiful looking hotels with lighted parking lots and welcoming entrances. By that point, we were extremely disappointed with our decision to stay at the Days Inn.
