“Promise as sure as the sun? I don't think so.”

I booked this hotel the day before, as we headed home to Michigan from Savannah Georgia. In addition to its location, I chose it specifically because it had an indoor pool for my kids to swim in. I originally booked online, then called the 800 number to make a slight change. After a 12-hour day of driving, we arrived to find the pool closed. This was disappointing - it could have been noted on the website or told to me by the agent. So I asked if they could make it up to us with an upgrade from a double to a King suite w/sofa sleeper. The answer was, "Oh, no, we're not authorized to do that." At this point I saw on the wall their "promise as sure as the sun", which states:"We are personally responsible and strive to ensure you have an exceptional stay with us.We are prepared to resolve any situation that does not meet our high standards. As your Hosts, we are empowered to meet your needs in a timely manner." I brought this to the attention of the desk clerk, and asked the obvious question: are you empowered or are you not? His answer was no. At that point, I was done. The "promise" is a lie. I can accept the pool being closed, or that no rooms were available to upgrade me to. But the reason I could not upgrade is because the clerk was NOT EMPOWERED to do so. The room was dingy, beds small. The breakfast offerings were very limited, and they could use another waffle maker (had to wait almost 15 minutes while others made theirs). But I would have left fairly satisfied if they had only lived up to their own policy. I will never stay at a Days Inn again.
