“I can't believe it fell off the wall!”

  , Saint Louis, Missouri
My room had a window heater, but I was told to use the thermostat on the wall for heat. The thermostat was connected to a typical baseboard-type heater, that was attached to the wall -- not the baseboard of the wall, mind you, but high up on the wall, over the television, perhaps 16 inches from the ceiling. I finally found the thermostat, which was located directly underneath a towel rack and was therefore hidden by the towel hanging on it. I turned the thermostat on and soon went to bed. At about 2:30 AM, I was jarred awake by a LOUD noise. I turned on the light, and the baseboard heater had fallen off the wall! It was still plugged in and running, since the power cord was securely clamped into the power socket. Too bad the heater was not as securely fastened. When I checked out, i told the guy at the desk that the heater had fallen off the wall. He replied, "That's impossible. They are bolted into the wall. All the other ones are fine." I asked if he wanted to go look at it, and he said, "No. I'll check it out later. It could not fall--it's bolted into the wall." I explained that the brackets holding the heater may be bolted into the wall, but the heater was not firmly attached to the brackets, because it did indeed fall and wake me up in the middle of the night." His final words were, "Well, you should have called last night and we would have moved you into a different room."
