“The absolute grungiest hotel room I've ever had the misfortune of staying in”

  , Colorado Springs
First off, let me state that I am an experienced traveler and I've stayed in dozens of hotels ranging from 1 to 5 stars in several different countries. Also, I'm not a clean-freak nor a "germophobe". That being said, the room I was given at this hotel is by far the dirtiest, nastiest room I've ever experienced. The carpet was disgustingly covered with a variety stains ranging from dark and crusty to white and powdery. It apparently had not been vacuumed recently nor shampooed since--I'm guessing here--sometime during the late Clinton administration. Normally I go barefoot in a hotel room once I settle in for the evening. At this hotel, I kept my socks on--there was no way I was going to let my skin touch that filthy carpet--and I threw the socks away upon my departure. The room was advertised as a non-smoking room, but from the heavy odor of smoke, I assume that it had been a smoking room for many years. The furniture was either encrusted with food residue or stained with various unidentifiable fluids. The light bulbs were missing from several of the light fixtures; making the room dark and depressing (perhaps this was intentional to help hide the filth). On the bright side, I found no evidence of bed bugs, and the sheets looked clean, so I sat on the edge of my bed and read a book until it was time to sleep. The walls--although sporting a new coat of paint--are very thin so I was able to clearly hear my neighbor's half of his phone conversation at 5 a.m. Why did I stay at this place even for one night? I had arrived late in the evening and the only other option I had was to sleep in my rental car. In retrospect, that might have been the better option.
