“Some rooms may be more "upgraded" than others...”

  , Portland
I stay in Salem frequently, so to save a few dollars this time, I decided to try the Days Inn which is the old Black Bear Inn. I checked in around 8:30pm and back out around 6:30am, so didn't use the pool or go to the breakfast. The room was clean and had new carpet and good linens, but the mattress was so hard I had to stuff pillows under myself to make it soft enough to sleep on. The "heater" cycled off and on noisily and randomly every 3-10 minutes, keeping me awake for a long time. The heater was so complicated to use that upon check-in, I was handed a paper titled, "To Turn On Your Heater Or Air Conditioner." It did provide heat, but the random, noisy cycling was far from the steady white noise one expects from a fan. And the mattress was definitely not "upgraded." Upon check-in, I asked the desk clerk what time the breakfast was available and instead of telling me, she said, "It says right on there," pointing to the map (not an ideal way to answer a simple question). She also made a point of saying, "This is your instructions for using the heater," which seemed like an omen, and it was. Upgraded? Well, maybe the breakfast and pool was nice (I will never know), and the place didn't smell like smoke, but that's about it. Next time I will just pay more and get a better night's sleep.
