“Trying Hard but not quite there yet”

Clean but rather "dated" Days Inn in Yankton, South Dakota. Admittedly an out-of-the-way destination in a small (13,000+) prairie town, this Days Inn was clean enough but had the feel of a motel from the 1960's suffering from benign neglect. Clean, but accepts smokers and while i had a clean & smell-free non-smoking room, all the common rooms and hallways reeked of cigarette smoke. My room fridge didn't cool even on the highest setting, although it was replaced swifly enough when I brought it to the desk's attention. One burnt-out bulb in a desk lamp, and one just inside the doorway to my room. And i found a bug crawling on the floor, NOT a 'bedbug', just some kind of small roach or something; ick. Never went over for breakfast, but the lobby and breakfast room were also rather dated and old-looking, just on the edge of being shabby. One of the desk clerks knew NOTHING about the internet connection or password, which was pretty frustrating; in fact, her most common answer to any question was, "I'm not sure....". So, need more training, supervision or better choice of employees? Any job in that town has got to be at a premium, I'd imagine. The hotel's maid service were very good at their jobs, everything sparkled once they'd been through the room to clean. Parking lot also a bit shabby and needed repaving and marking. Altogether a good enough value for the money, but the place needs some time, attention and money spent on it. My room was right under the staircase to the 2nd floor, and i was repeatedly woken up or disturbed by what sounded like herds of animals running up or down. avoid Room 106!!! i should have asked to be moved. Altogether an okay stay, in a town without many alternatives in name-brand hotels. One big security issue. The outside doors, which usually would have to have a guest-card room key to open, are marked: THIS DOOR UNLOCKED DAIILY FROM 7:00 A.M. TO NOON. They might as well wave a flag for burglars!
