“Good stuff and stupid stuff”

  , Salem
After I checked into my room, I found that there were no light bulbs in the lamps except the ceiling light. The desk clerk was able to move us to a better room which better fit our needs even though our conference had filled up this and many hotels in the area. They were short staffed so didn't have any maintenance people around at 5 PM. I did notice that there was only one set of hand towel and wash cloth in a room for two people. I had to go back to the front desk across the parking lot to get additional towels for my room mate. The next day after returning from our conference late at night I discovered that when the room cleaner went through the room and removed used towels, they didn't replace all the towels -- I had to hike back over to the night office window to ask for another set of hand towel and wash cloth. This was the stupid stuff. But typical of these financial times, this place seems to be hiring fewer staff and cutting corners to save money which is going to bite them in the end. Another clueless thing: most of us NW folks who enjoy all the good NW apples produced here don't eat Red Delicious apples because they taste like cardboard. We all know the better apples which are available in abundance. Why this place puts out Red Delicious apples for breakfast seems like another skimpy cost savings measure which doesn't provide their guests with good NW hospitality -- either that or the decision makers don't eat apples and just buy what is cheapest -- which is the cardboard that most local people won't eat so the stores mark down the price to sell them. I also find it strange that each of the two of us who stayed here for a business trip couldn't get receipts printed in each of our names to use as receipts for tax purposes. They need to hire some better software programmers to make this happen.
