“Bathroom NOT ADA Compliant as Advertised”

  , Marietta
My husband uses a power chair, and cannot walk at all. He can manage in an ADA-compliant bathroom, including transferring to an ADA-compliant tub shower with a shower chair. This room was advertised as being ADA-compliant. To be honest, the room itself was great for an exterior-entry motel room. The bed was comfy, the linens and blankets were upscale, and the wall unit was modern and actually controlled the temperature without a lot of noise. For a non-handicapped traveler, this place would be pretty good. But if you need an ADA-compliant bathroom, this hotel does not offer one - despite their claims. The main issue was that there was no room for the wheelchair to access the tub. There is supposed to be 5 feet of clearance to all fixtures, and there was barely 3 feet. The side of the tub was almost entirely blocked by the toilet. This made it very dangerous for my husband to transfer into the tub. Then, the tub did not have grab bars on the control end, making it impossible for him to properly clean himself. The ADA requires at least a 24-inch bar at the control end of the tub. There was also no grab bar behind the toilet, just one on the side of the toilet. Again, the ADA requires a grab bar behind the toilet as well as on the side. Finally, there was no way to keep water inside the tub while using the provided shower chair, and no drain hole in the floor outside the tub. This meant that the floor flooded with 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water, making transfer out even more dangerous for me as the caretaker as well as for my husband. When we complained, the woman at the front desk told us that the bathroom had passed the Days Inn inspection, so there was nothing she was willing to do about it. Given the holiday weekend, we had to stay 20 miles away in order to find a truly accessible room.
